Tranny Fest was founded in 1997 by Christopher Lee and Al Austin and is the world's first transgender/genderqueer film festival and emerged for the reason so many marginalized communities have organized film festivals: the absence of authentic representations of our lives and experiences in the mainstream commercial media. In the 11 years since, we have exhibited groundbreaking, provocative, outrageous, courageous, moving and innovative works that show the complexity of lives lived on the transgender/genderqueer spectrum.
In 2003 Christopher and Al retired, leaving the world's first transgender film festival and cultural event in the hands of their 2003 Co-Director, Shawna Virago. Click here to read Shawna's biography.
