You don't want to miss this US premiere of feature film Orlan,
Carnal Art. In Stephen Oriah's new work, prominent French
performance artist, Orlan, uses plastic surgery for the sake of
art, challenging the notion that the free market economy defines
standards of beauty. Working with New York surgeons, her body
is connected to a variety of interactive transmission networks
during her operations, combining cybernetics and biology. Her
eyes wide open, her voice resolute, and her mind fully conscious,
Orlan is both creator and creation in this grandiose program of
mutation. The film chronicles the evolution and revolution of
her morphology over the course of several performances, revealing
the original sensations behind the artist's thoughts.
Preceeded by the Retro 80's Sci-Fi, autobiographical film Phallocy.
How does a 32 year-old lesbian become a man? Directed by Jay Sennett,
Phallocy uses spoken word, music and experimental techniques
to explore the struggles of a female-to-male transsexual. Double-exposed,
sepia-toned experimental footage and sharp editing create the
mood for the filmmaker's confrontation with living as a female-bodied
man.
